David Lynch, celebrity sommelier and author of Vino Italiano, to be keynote speaker at Taste of Italy 2017

The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Texas is thrilled to announce that celebrity sommelier and author David Lynch (above, left) will be a featured speaker at the 2017 Taste of Italy Houston fair for trade and consumers.

Not only will David be meeting and tasting with winemakers on the first day of the gathering (at an exclusive event open only to exhibitors), but he will also appear on a panel that will be open to media, trade, and consumers on the day of the walk-around tasting. He will also be dining with exhibitors the previous evening.

David’s qualifications as an authority on the wines of Italy are nearly too many to list here. But here are a few highlights from his career.

In 2000, he created the wine list at Joe Bastianich and Mario Batali’s Babbo, where he served as the venue’s wine director. Like the restaurant, the list itself — with more than 300 Italian wines — is widely viewed as a “break-through” moment in the renaissance of Italian wines in the U.S.

In 2002, he and Joe Bastianich published Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy (Clarkson Potter), another watershed moment in the new wave of Italian wine in North America. It was the first comprehensive guide to Italian wines ever published in English. And David’s experience as a sommelier specialized in Italian wines brought a unique dynamic to his chronicling of the Italian wine world. It remains a top reference on Italian wines even today.

David has served as a senior editor at Wine & Spirits magazine. He has contributed countless articles on wine to Food and Wine and Bon Appétit. And he is regularly featured as a wine expert in some of the top lifestyle magazines in the country (see the cover of San Francisco below).

He is also a winner of a James Beard award for wine writing.

The organizers couldn’t be more happy to have him join us.

“There are really just a handful of Italian wine specialists in the U.S. who can come close to his level of expertise,” says Jeremy Parzen, an Italian-focused wine writer based in Houston and a consultant to the Taste of Italy fair. “But his experience and skill as one of the best sommeliers in the country puts him in a class of his own in terms of what he brings to the table. He’s also one of the most engaging speakers working in our industry today.”

Stay tuned for more details on David’s visit to Houston and his appearances at Taste of Italy 2017.
