At yesterday’s celebration of Italian Republic Day (June 2), the City of Houston proclaimed the day “Italian National Day” in the city. The proclamation was delivered on behalf of Mayor Sylvester Turner by Houston Councilwoman Mary Nan Huffman.
On Thursday, June 2, Italian Republic Day, IACC members gathered with guests at the Italian Consolate’s celebration of the holiday. On that occasion, the Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner officially declared June 2 Italian National Day in the city.
The Authentic Italian Table Event event was also a celebration of Italian culture and cuisine, part of the ongoing Extraordinary Italian Taste campaign, which promotes awareness of authentic Italian food products and foodways.
Hosted at the beautiful Cohen House on the campus of Rice University, the event included addresses by Ciattaglia, Nissoli, and Huffman, as well as a performance of “Fratelli d’Italia” (“Brothers of Italy”), the Italian national anthem, followed by the “Star Spangled Banner.”
Members of the Italian Air Force, stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, were also in attendance.
Following speeches by Italian and Houston government officials, guests enjoyed a wide range of traditional Italian dishes and food products.
Participating restaurants included: @amalfihouston, Aroma Pizza, and @romahtx. Food producers included @fumagallisalumi, who provided the @prosciuttodiparma_it, and the @granapadano and Formaggio Piave consortiums. Prosecco was provided by @peninsolawines.
Needless to say, the food and wine was the perfect touch to make June 2 a great Italian Republic Day and the first-ever Italian National Day in the city of Houston!

In one bittersweet note during the festivities, Italian Consul General Federico Ciattaglia shared the news that his mandate will end this fall and that he will be leaving Houston.
