Welcome new IACC member Thorntree Slate and Marble!
The Houston-based importer and interior designer specializes in imported porcelain, tile, and “natural stone from the great quarries of the world.”
Stuart Rae and his family first opened the doors of their company’s now landmark Houston showroom in 1980 after relocating here from their native South Africa (the Thorntree is the iconic tree of the African savanna).
Although they import slate, natural slabs, natural stone tile, and waterjet and stone mosaics from all over the world (including Italy), most of the company’s porcelain comes from Italian artisans.
With more than 35 years in business as Houston’s premier importer of stone, marble, and porcelain, Thorntree has longstanding relationships with its Italian suppliers and often takes select clients to Italy for guided tours of the quarries where the stone and marble are excavated and processed before being shipped to the U.S.
Their clients include high-end residential and commercial properties across Texas with many high-profile Houstonians’ homes and businesses among them.
Not only do they source their wares themselves but they also provide their customers with design services, creating some of the most beautiful interiors in the greater Houston area and across Texas and beyond.
Thanks to Stuart’s personal friendship with Texas music great Alejandro Escovedo, Thorntree Slate and Marble is also one of the co-presenter’s of Escovedo’s upcoming January 6 concert with Italian band Don Antonio (see this October 2018 profile of the singer-songwriter and his current band, which he met in Italy, here).
